Medical Qualifications

Mr Robert Hutchins graduated with a Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Science degree from St Bartholomew’s Hospital and undertook further training in liver surgery and transplantation at hospitals in Cambridge as well as the Royal Free and Hammersmith hospitals, London. His specialist training in liver and pancreatic surgery was completed in 2001.

Medical Experience

Mr Hutchins is a Senior Lecturer at the Institute of Cancer in London and a member of the National Cancer Peer Review Team and, as such, oversees research and quality control in the treatment of patients with pancreatic or liver cancers. He has a particular research interest in the development of new drugs as well as developing the molecular and genetic understanding of cancer.

Becoming a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of England in 1995, Mr Hutchins became a Consultant Surgeon in 2002 with over 400 liver resections and 250 pancreatic resections performed since then. He currently treats NHS patients at St Bartholomew’s Hospital and the Royal London Hospital and sees private patients at the London Bridge Hospital.

  • Secondary liver cancer treatment

    Despite often having very successful treatment for a primary cancer, unfortunately many patients will go on to develop secondary cancer in other sites around the body such as the bones, lungs and liver. The most dangerous time for development of secondary disease is the first two years after diagnosis, although sometimes the disease will have already spread by the time that the cancer is diagnosed. The development of secondary disease is a feature of the aggressiveness and ability of the primary cancer to spread beyond its original site and this does not reflect any failure on behalf of surgical treatment or subsequent chemotherapy or radiotherapy treatments.
