Qualifications (including places of study and dates)

Dr Melikian trained at Guy’s and St Thomas’ Hospitals Medical School, University of London. He was awarded a BSc in Biochemistry with First Class Honours in 1993 having obtained the highest mark in his year group. He qualified in Medicine in 1996 with University of London Honours. He was elected a Member of the Royal College of Physicians in 1999. In 2010 he completed a MD at University of London.

Notable clinical achievements and professional memberships

Dr Melikian underwent post graduate training at Hammersmith, Royal Brompton and King’s College Hospitals in London and undertook a two year interventional cardiology fellowship at the world renowned Aalst Cardiovascular Centre in Belgium. He was appointed Clinical Lecturer in Cardiology in 2008 prior to taking up his current post as Consultant Cardiologist and Senior Lecturer in Cardiology at King’s College Hospital and King’s College School of Medicine in 2010. He has been awarded over 11 Awards, Scholarships and Prizes throughout his career including the prestigious British Cardiac Society John Parker Fellowship (2005 - 2007), Foord Caiger Prize in Cardiology and the Golding Bird and Treasurer’s Medals. In 2012 he was invited to join a panel of cardiologists to provide a comprehensive round-the-clock cardiology opinion for the Olympic Family during the London Olympic Games.

Current academic/ clinical positions (NHS and private)

Dr Melikian has an on-going clinical research programme with an emphasis on applied coronary physiology and all aspects of interventional cardiology in particular myocardial infarction. He is also involved in multiple international clinical trials. To date he has co-supervised two clinical PhD students at King's College London. His research is supported through a number of scientific grants and over the past five years he has received awards from the British Cardiac Society, British Heart Foundation and National Academy of Sciences.

Area(s) of speciality / particular clinical interests

He has a large clinical practice specialising in all aspects of general and interventional cardiology in particular management of cardiovascular risk factors (such as hypertension), coronary angiography and angioplasty/stenting (including procedures using the radial (wrist) route), percutaneous PFO/ASD closure as well as management of valvular heart disease, heart failure and palpitations.
